Each step across the historic railroad bridge, which links downtown Marietta with Historic Harmar Village, takes you further back in time - back to the site of the first settlement in the Northwest Territory. Fort Harmar was built in 1785, on the banks of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers, at the edge of what was then, an untamed wilderness. It would be three more years before General Rufus Putnam and his men built Fort Campus Martius that would later become Marietta, Ohio.
Historic Harmar Village, with its brick streets, lamp posts, restored train cars and historic buildings, is now home to various shops, eateries and three museums.
The Toy and Doll Museum, housed in a restored Victorian home, is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00pm - 4:00pm (Spring through Fall) and features dollhouses, teddy bears, antique toys, games and collectable dolls.
Marietta's Soda Museum is a nostalgic trip back to the days of soda fountains, juke boxes and 10 cent Cokes. Tour the museum filled with soda memorabilia or simply sit back, sip a thick chocolate shake and enjoy the seasonal outdoor café with its brick walls and wrought iron gates.
The Fearing House, open Saturdays and Sundays (May through October), was built in 1847 for Henry Fearing, one of the area's prominent citizens. The house, an example of Federal style architecture, is furnished in a range of 19th century styles, representing the lifestyles of Harmar and Marietta's middle-class during the Victorian era.
Other areas of interest include the Civil War Era Post Office, French Historic Marker, The Anchorage and the Harmar School Mural.
